The Work Happens Because People Turn Up
Every river cleanup, every school session, every water sample recorded — all of it depends on people who decided to give a day.
KIWI is a young organisation. That means volunteers here are not filling a slot in a machine that would run without them. You are part of how this gets built, and the work you do is visible immediately.
You will also learn something real. Most volunteers arrive knowing very little about watersheds and leave able to explain why a stream full of certain insects is a stream worth protecting.

Four Kinds of Day in the Field
You can take part in one of these or all of them. Tell us what interests you and we will match you to the next activity.
School Water Education
Support classroom sessions where students learn why water matters, where theirs comes from, and what threatens it. You help run activities, answer questions and keep energy up in a room of very engaged children.
River & Catchment Cleanups
Physical, visible work. Clearing waste from streambeds and riverbanks alongside students and community members — the kind of day where the difference is obvious before you leave.
Water Quality Monitoring
Sampling streams with nets, identifying what lives in the water, and recording results. Freshwater invertebrates are one of the clearest indicators of river health — you learn to read them.
Restoration & Tree Planting
Reforestation and riverbank stabilisation in degraded catchment areas. Slower work than a cleanup, with a longer payoff — this is what keeps springs flowing decades from now.

Before You Sign Up
The questions we are asked most often by people considering it.
Yes, and most people do. We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds. Training and guidance are provided so that everyone can contribute meaningfully, whatever they arrive knowing.
No. Some volunteers join a single cleanup day; others come back every month. Tell us your availability on the form and we will only contact you about activities that fit it.
Field activities take place in the Kilimanjaro region, so most volunteers are local or visiting. If you are overseas and want to help remotely — with research, communications, translation or fundraising — say so on the form and we will find a way to use it.
Adults can sign up directly. Young people are very welcome too and are a core part of our work, but under-18s should take part through a school, a youth group, or with a parent or guardian.
Closed shoes you do not mind getting wet or muddy, clothing suitable for sun and rain, water and sun protection. We will confirm anything specific — gloves, boots, sampling equipment — before each activity.
