The Kilimanjaro Water Initiative is a group that brings people together to protect water. We work with communities, businesses, government institutions, researchers and development partners to make sure there is water for everyone.
KIWI helps protect water sources, restore ecosystems and build long-term water security across the Kilimanjaro landscape. That work is deliberately collective — because no single organisation, however well funded, can secure a watershed on its own.
At KIWI we think water is very important. Water is the foundation of ecosystems, thriving communities and sustainable agriculture. We believe water is what businesses need to grow and what people need in order to build a life.
Water is not simply something we need. It is the foundation of everything — and we exist to protect that foundation for future generations.
Like a Kiwifruit Needs Water to Grow
The communities, businesses and ecosystems of the Kilimanjaro region need healthy watersheds and sustainable water management in exactly the same way.
Without water, people cannot build lives. Agricultural productivity declines. Ecosystems deteriorate. Economic opportunities are lost. The Kilimanjaro Water Initiative exists to make sure that water is available for everyone — and stays available.

KIWI knows that we cannot solve water problems alone. We are an organisation that connects stakeholders, mobilises investment, facilitates collaboration and delivers solutions on the ground.
That approach matters. We deliver our own programmes, and we also make it possible for many organisations to deliver together — aligning what a community needs, what a government institution can authorise, what a business can fund and what a researcher can measure.
